On Monday, students had Mr. Desmond as a substitute as Mrs. Goolsby was out sick. They did warm-ups on page 428 (15-22). For classwork they did page 457 (30-35). Homework was workbook page 9-1 and 9-2 on integers.

Tuesday, students did warm-ups on page 425 (49-51); change all numbers to decimals. For classwork we learned Scientific Notation with negative exponents and did a worksheet for homework.

Wednesday's warm-ups will be on page 425 (52-54). Then we'll take a Blue Diamond Assessment on Scientific Notation. The homework tonight will be a worksheet on percentages.

Please remember to ask students for signed papers! By now you should have seen their latest test, on decimals, fractions, and percents.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Today we checked homework on percents (page 434, 1-11), involving tax, tips, and discounts. Students then began their decimal and percent test. We will finish the test tomorrow in class. For homework tonight, regular math classes should do page 424 (27-42), while advanced classes should do numbers 43-54 on that page. Show all work! Especially show the division involved in changing a fraction to a decimal.

Parents, please remember to ask students for signed papers weekly. No parent should ever be surprised at a student's grade when report cards are issued. Feel free to request a conference with the team if you see a need.

I apologize that the site was not updated earlier this week. We have had a death in our family, my mother-in-law, and I was out of school 2 days. It has been difficult trying to get back to work and catching up. We have had a house full of company, so time has been at a premium this week. Thanks for your understanding!

Now let's keep our fingers crossed for some snow!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Today we worked on ratios and proportions, which we will use later in the week to solve percent problems. We learned that a ratio is just a fancy name for a fraction, and a proportion is simply 2 equal fractions! Students should read page 392 and pages 398-399. Homework is on page 400 (1-19). The warm-ups today were a review of decimal division, page 129 (7,8,18,19,20). Students were reminded to do the "decimal dance" and then "point and scratch." Remembering to use the "front number" trick (or "boxing out" as some students call it) will make division with large numbers much easier.

Wednesday's warm-ups are on page 129 also, numbers 9-17. Students should do the "decimal dance" and "point and scratch" only, not work out all problems in their entirety. The lesson is on page 426-427, on finding the value in a % problem. Do page 428 (1-14) for homework.

Thursday's warm-ups are on page 416 (1-9), a review of changing from percents, to decimals and fractions. Homework is in the workbook, Lesson 8-9. Students must show their work. Answers alone will get no credit. Examples will be shown in class.

Finally, warm-ups for Friday are on page 129 (21-26). After checking homework, we will take a Blue Diamond test on word problems with decimals and percents.

Reminder: After school help has been cancelled for this Thursday, due to other school commitments teachers already have that afternoon. We will resume after school help next Thursday, January 28.

As this is the last week of the second quarter, all make-up work must be turned in by Friday. Grades will be averaged and SPAN updated on Monday, January 25th. Grades will not be changed after that date.

As always, parents, please ask your students to show you all graded papers. We do not want any surprises when report cards come home on Friday, January 29th!

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

On Monday, math classes took a quiz on decimals: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Homework: (regular math) Worksheet "What Did Grok Do With His New Helicopter?" (advanced) Workbook 3-8

Warm-ups: page 126 (14-18)

On Tuesday, we did warm-ups on page 126 (23-26), and then checked homework. Tonight students will solve decimal equations (see page 134-135) and do Workbook 3-10. Be sure to show that you are doing the same operation on each side of the equation!

Wednesday, we will continue warm-ups on page 126 (29, 30, 36, 37, 38). Then we will learn to write percents, both as decimals and fractions. Read page 418-419. Then do page 420 (1-21).

Thursday, we will do warm-ups on page 123 (47-50), and practice writing some numbers in scientific notation again. After checking homework, we will write decimals and fractions as percents. Read page 422-423 in the text, then do page 424 (1-26).

Friday, warm-ups will be some more practice on the board with scientic notation and also some division of decimal problems. Then we will do Workbook 8-8, for a grade! Do the work on notebook paper so that I can take it up to grade.

Reminders: Thursday afternoon homework club, for help on percents.

Students will receive their decimal quizzes back on Wednesday or Thursday, for
parent signatures.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

On Monday, we began multiplying decimals. No more lining up the decimals as in adding and subtracting! Instead, we count off the number of decimal places in the problem, and then count off the same number of places to match in the answer. Easy!
Warm-ups: page 105 (43-50)
Worksheet: "Why do some people sleep in hair rollers?"

On Tuesday, we took a Blue Diamond Assessment, on multiplying and dividing decimals.
Warm-ups: page 105 (33-39)
Homework: Workbook 3-6. (More practice on multiplying decimals.)

Wednesday, we'll learn to divide decimals by whole numbers (See page 124 of the book). The advanced class will also start division of decimals by a decimal. Homework will be a worksheet entitled "Daffynition Decoder". The advanced classes will also work on a worksheet entitled "How would you describe Wanda Farr After She Met 3 Lions Deep in the Jungle?"
Warm-ups: page 109 (42-50).

Thursday, we'll take Blue Diamond Assessment 6, on converting between fractions and decimals and ordering decimal numbers. Then we'll practice division of decimals by a decimal.
Warm-ups: page 113 (1-3).
Homework: Division Worksheet

Friday, we'll take our weekly quiz on multiplying and dividing decimals. Good luck!

Remember, we will resume after school help this Thursday, from 3:15 until 5:00. Anyone needing extra help is welcome. You need to have a parent permission form on file to stay. See Mrs. Goolsby or Mrs. Woodward for forms.

Please be sure that you have checked SPAN for updated grades. Several students have not returned interims that were to be signed the week before the holidays. These need to be returned immediately! Thanks!

Many students are receiving extra credit points on quizzes and tests for getting parent signatures on them. All students should be taking advantage of this opportunity! Please ask your child to show all papers to you when they are returned, so that you can keep up with their progress on a regular basis. No one should be surprised at a grade when it comes home on the report card!

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

On Monday of this week, we read page 167-168 on changing fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. We did page 169 (1-19) for homework.

Tuesday, we checked our homework, and then finished page 169.

Wednesday and Thursday will be special days for the Medieval Festival, so we will not have math classes on these days.

On Friday, we will check our homework and do warm-ups. This will be a shortened class due to afternoon activities in language arts. There will be no quiz this week.

SPAN has been updated and all students should print out an interim to be signed and returned. Students will also receive a quiz back for parents to sign this week.

There will be no afterschool tutoring this week due to a faculty meeting that all teachers must attend on Thursday. We will resume January 7, 2010!

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

On Monday, we worked on multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10. We read page 106-107 in the text, and did page 108-109 for homework (1-32, omitting exercises with directions which read "convert each measure.")

Tuesday, we continued to work on this same skill, doing Workbook page 3-4.

Wednesday, warm-ups are one page 225 (57,58, 59). The lesson is on scientific notation, on page 114-115 of the text. Students should do page 115 (1-30) as homework.

Thursday, continue warm-ups on page 225 (60-64). Then do workbook 3-5.

Friday, warm-ups are on page 228 (18-21). Then we will take a quiz on the decimal lessons, including decimal place value, comparing and ordering decimals, forms of writing decimals (including standard, expanded and word form), adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals by powers of 10. Scientific notation will be on next week's quiz.

REMINDERS: Students should have shown parents the Thanksgiving graph to be signed, and sometime during the week should bring home the quiz on decimal place value to be signed. Parents, please ask students for these graded papers, so that you can stay informed of their progress in math. SPAN will be updated next week.

After school help will continue this Thursday afternoon, until 5:00. Students must have signed permission from parents to participate in afterschool tutoring.
