There were no math classes held on Monday, so that students could continue doing activities related to the Renaissance Fair. Therefore, there was no math homework. Take a break!
On Tuesday, we continued our work with decimals. Regular math classes were assigned page 122 (26 -31). Third period math should add numbers 32 and 33 on that page also.
Advanced math classes should do workbook 3-5. On numbers 7-12, change exponents to negatives before writing the numbers in scientific notation.
On Wednesday, regular math classes will learn about scientific notation. Read pages 114-115 if you miss class on this day, then do Workbook 3-5 for homework. Advanced math classes will begin multiplying decimals, and do Workbook 3-6 for homework.
Thursday, we will continue working on multiplying decimals and scientific notation. Regular math classes should do page 116 (1-21) while advanced math students should do page 122 (1-6 and 10-19). It would be a good idea to do this multiplying on graph paper if you prefer.
After checking homework on Friday, we will do a worksheet on Scientific Notation in regular math classes, entitled "Puzzles, Twisters and Teasers." Advanced math students will begin dividing decimal numbers by whole numbers. Read pages 124-125 in the book. Then do page 125-126 (1-30) as homework.
On Monday, we will take a quiz on multiplying decimals and scientific notation. For homework, students should do the back of the "Puzzles, Twisters, and Teasers" in regular math classes, while advanced students will finish their quiz at home if necessary.
There will be no math classes on Tuesday, so that we may do some team activities to conclude our study of the Renaissance era, and students will take their science test.
Enjoy the winter break!!!!!! I will miss all of you!

Welcome back! We missed everyone during the break! We hope your holiday was terrific.
As we start back this week, we'll be starting a new unit on decimals. Today we'll learn about the basics: place value, different ways to express decimals, and ordering and comparing decimals. Regular math classes will do Lesson 3-1 (1-9) in the workbook, while advanced math should do page 94 (1-16) in the textbook.
Remember that we will offer after school tutoring tomorrow, Tuesday, to students needing extra help. See Mrs. Woodward for a permission form to stay. We need some advanced math students to help tutor during these help sessions, if anyone is interested. Thanks. (Be sure to bring a snack; you'll get hungry by this time in the afternoon!)
All students will have a test on fractions and mixed numbers on Thursday. We will review concepts on this test all week during warm-ups to help any students who are struggling. This test covers all the skills we have practiced over the past 3-4 weeks, on comparing and ordering fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed numbers.
Remember that Friday is an early release day. Students will be released at 12:30 that day. During the morning, we will have our school spelling bee, and do some special activities in social studies to get ready for our Renaissance Fair next Friday. Therefore, we will not have math classes on Friday.

Today, students worked on a review of fractions and mixed numbers. We checked our Blue Diamond Assessments so that they could see how well they had performed on those skills. For homework, regular math classes should do the Bingo side of their worksheet on dividing fractions, while advanced math students should do page 288 (1-12) on solving multiplication and division of fraction equations. Work should be shown on 2 or 3 lines, on notebook paper, depending on whether or not they are using the shortcut (multiplying by the reciprocal, rather than dividing.)
On Tuesday, we will continue to review fractions and mixed numbers. We will have a test on all of the skills we have practiced with mixed numbers the week after we return from Thanksgiving break, late in the week. Advanced students should complete the Bingo side of their worksheet for homework, if they do not finish it in class today.
Have a terrific Thanksgiving!

Warm-ups were on page 27(55-59) for regular math, while advanced classes practiced with nested equations on the board. After checking homework, we read a story involving exponents, entitled One Grain of Rice. Regular math students were assigned to finish the worksheet from the weekend, problems 10-17, and advanced math students copied nested equations from the board to work on tonight.
Wednesday, we will do warm-ups on page 30 (21-27) in regular classes, and continue the nested equations on the board for advanced math. These equations contain brackets and braces. Students must remember to begin solving the equations on the inside and work their way out. Homework for 2nd and 3rd periods is on page 22 (20-27), while 6th and 7th should do problems from the board again.
Thursday we will take a Blue Diamond evaluation on Exponents and Order of Operations. This is not a graded evaluation, but we let us know how each student is doing on these 2 skills compared with other sixth graders in Wake Co. Regular math classes will do homework on page 41 (27-34) while 6th and 7th period will have boardwork problems again.
On Friday, we will do warm-ups on page 43 (15, 16, 17) and then take a quiz on exponents and order of operations, this time for a grade. For homework, morning classes should do page 41(15-26) while afternoon classes will do a worksheet. Have a great weekend!
Don't forget to send your grandparents a card to wish them Happy Grandparents Day on Sunday! They especially love homemade cards!
Remember also that our fundraiser starts this week. Thanks to all parents in advance for purchasing from our school fundraiser. The money will be wisely spent to bring special programs and activities to your child's classroom.

Monday, August 30: Welcome, Anacondas! Today in math we continued our work on exponents, first doing warm-ups on page 14 (25-32), and then checking Friday's homework (page 14, 1-24). Tonight the assignment for 2nd and 3rd periods is the workbook lesson 1-3, while advanced math should do page 15 (47-53). Periods 2, 3, and 6 should work on their book damage list which is due on Friday. 7th period will do their book damage list starting tomorrow night, as we did not get to that item in class today.
Remember, all math work should be done in pencil on looseleaf paper. The assignment is not completed until it is placed in the math section of the binder, and locked into place with the three rings.
Students should remember to copy the problems and show their work.
There will be a quiz on Thursday on exponents. We hope this will be a great week!
