Today, all math classes continued to explore exponents. Regular math classes prepared for their quiz tomorrow on writing numbers in exponential form and finding the value of an expression. Their homework tonight is on page 14 of their text, problems 10-24. Advanced math classes also explored rules for multiplying, and dividing exponents, as well as raising a power to a power. Some classes will even explore negative exponents later in the week. Advanced math classes have some problems to do tonight that they copied from the board. All classes will have a short quiz tomorrow on exponents.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday we will work on Order of Operations. There will be another very short check-up on Friday on Order of Operations. More information to follow!

Friday, August 26, 2011

Friday, August 26: We began our unit on exponents today. Students will do a worksheet on exponents for homework over the weekend. We'll practice some more on Monday, and then take a very quick quiz on exponents on Tuesday. This quiz covers a very small amount of information, so it will be OK for us to quiz early.

Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we will work on order of operations, and then take another short, quick quiz on that skill on Friday.

Regular math classes will deal with positive exponents only, while advanced classes will also study negative exponents, and learn the rules for multiplying and dividing with exponents, as well as working problems with exponents inside parentheses. Ask to see your child's class notes, so that you can see what each class is studying specifically.

First period math received their math books today. They need to make sure they keep up with these books, as they are very expensive to replace. Ask your child if their math book is locked
in their locker. Other class periods will receive their math books one day next week.

Remember to fill out and send back all forms in the green folders that you received during orientation. Thanks!

We discussed EOG scores in all classes today, so students know how well they did on these tests!
Parents will receive an official report with the report card at the end of the year. Congratulations, everyone, for working so hard and doing so well!

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

During the week, we will be discussing the rain forest! This is actually a science and social studies unit, with a little math mixed in, but as we spent so much time the past couple of weeks reviewing for and taking the EOG's, we thought it would be nice to take a break from math. Besides, this is an area of great interest and concern for Mrs. Goolsby.

Students will be working in a rain forest booklet, with pages to read and worksheets to complete. The booklets will be discussed in class and students may take them home to work on also. They should be completed by the end of the week. They will be graded, so do a good job on them. The grade will count as a social studies assignment.

During the week, students will also receive the quiz they took last week on functions and transformations. We'll discuss them in class, and then take a test on those two units at the end of the week. Be sure to ask questions as we review and reteach for that test.

Next week we'll begin our unit on integers: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

Monday, May 9, 2011

Today, we reviewed putting decimal numbers in order from least to greatest, first by lining up the decimals, then placing zeros in as place holders. We also reviewed GCF and LCM as well as a permutation problem and reflections, translations, and rotations for our quiz tomorrow. (See page 619, 17-21, for part of this review.)

Advanced math classes received a quiz back on making predictions which they should get signed tonight.

Tonight's homework is in the Workbook, Lesson 12-5.

Also, students should review Chapters 7 (geometry), 8 (proportions and percents), 9 (integers), 10 (area and circumference), 11 (probability), and 12 (functions, translations, reflections, and rotations) to prepare for their EOG test in math on Wednesday.

TUESDAY: We will review for our EOG on page 633 (omit #9) and the names of angle relationships in chapter 7 (page 341). After checking our homework, we will take our quiz on chapter 12, function tables, translations, reflections, and rotations.

Regular math classes will take their quizzes home to be signed tonight.

WEDNESDAY: We will begin class with a final review of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals to prepare for the calculator inactive part of the EOG. Homework tonight will be in the workbook, Lesson 12-1 and page 628 (4, 5, and 6). This homework will be our final review before the test.

THURSDAY: We will have a shortened class, due to the EOG's, as we did on Wednesday. We'll check our homework from last night and then take a break! WHEW! Thanks for working so hard on EOG's. No homework tonight!

FRIDAY: Again, shortened classes today due to the EOG's. Let's do something fun: a logic puzzle. And one more weekend without homework!

Monday, May 2, 2011

Today we took up the Workbook Lesson 11-6 that was assigned over the weekend to be graded. They will be returned during the week. We practiced some warm-up problems on the board determining how many outcomes were possible with different permutations. Then we learned to write an equation for a function. Tonight, read page 598-599, and do page 600-601 (1-24, omitting 1, 10, 17, 18, and 19).

For warm-ups on TUESDAY, we will practice making some more predictions, as on page 582. After checking homework, we will learn to graph transformations. Read page 610-611, then do page 611-612. You will need graph paper to do the next 3 lessons. You may put several lessons on one sheet of paper.

On WEDNESDAY, we will do Workbook Lesson 12-3 as a warm-up. Then we will learn to graph reflections. Read page 613-614, then do page 614-615 (1-13).

THURSDAY, we will practice som more graphing of reflections, using Workbook Lesson 12-4.

Finally, on FRIDAY, we will review area and circumference of circles, then check homework. We will practice graphing rotations. Read page 616-617 and so page 618-619 (1-13).

Remember to start reviewing each night in your workbook to make sure that you are ready for the EOG's next week. Try one or two problems on each workbook page to see if you remember the material.

Students may stay after school Tuesday or Wednesday for extra help. Just have a parent write a note in the planner on that day to give a student permission to stay. We are here until 4:45 each day.

Also, remember to check grades in SPAN at least once weekly so that you can keep up with progress. Parents should have seen each grade, to be signed, before it is entered into SPAN. Please ask to see one grade each week, parents. Thanks for your help.

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Today, we practiced some sample problems for the EOG's. If you are absent today, be sure to get a copy of these problems from the board. They are very important! After checking homework on page 582 (1-11), we will do a review on page 586 (1-3), page 587 (1-4) and page 592 (16-19). Finish this review at home tonight. This will help to prepare us for our quiz on Friday on permutations and combinations. Also, students received back their probability quizzes from page 593 and we discussed them. They should be signed tonight.

No math class on Thursday due to the Field Trip to the planetarium in Chapel Hill!

On Friday, we will check the reviews listed above, then take our quiz. For homework, do Workbook 11-6.

  2. Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 6th period math classes received their first probability quizzes back today to get signed. Please ask for these tonight, parents. 7th period math class will have theirs returned tomorrow. This class has 2 letters to give to parents tonight from the school.

  3. All students need to make sure they have turned in their field trip permission forms, report cards signed, and yellow registration cards.

  4. On Tuesday afternoon, we will offer tutoring for students who had difficulty on the probability quiz. We will reteach and review those concepts to help students prepare for the upcoming test on Thursday. If you have not already filled out a permission form to stay on Tuesday afternoons for HW club, be sure to have a parent sign permission in your planner for you to stay tomorrow. Indicate what time the parent would like for the student to be picked up, where, and by whom. We are available to help until 5:00 tomorrow.

  5. On Tuesday, we will do warm-ups in our workbook, Lesson 11-4. #1 and 2. Then we will learn 2 new vocabulary words, permutations and combinations, and find out the difference between the two. Read page 578-579, then do problems 1-4 in the first set on page 579, and 1 and 2 in the last set. Homework tonight is in the Workbook, Lesson 11-3 for 2nd period, Lesson 11-5 for all other classes.

  6. On Wednesday, we will continue to practice probability problems, learning to compute factorials. Homework for Wednesday is page 590-591 (1-15), which is the chapter review. This is a good review for our test tomorrow.

  7. On Thursday, we will continue warm-ups in Lesson 11-4 in the workbook, problems 3 and 4. Then we will practice finding out the number of possible outcomes for compound events, both permutations and combinations. Then we will have a take-home test on probability. This test will include material from Lessons 11-1 through 11-5 in the textbook, but not the material on permutations and combinations. We will practice those concepts more before taking a test on them after spring break. (The test will be near the end of the week we come back.)

  8. On Friday, we will continue to practice permutations and combinations. The homework over the break will be quick and easy: an Easter Egg worksheet in which the students hunt for eggs with equivalent fractions, decimals and percents. This should be fun, and they may decorate their eggs if they'd like!

  9. Have a terrific spring break. We all deserve it. We've worked hard!

  10. Remember, when we return, we will be ready for our field trip to Chapel Hill on Thursday of that week.

It is on page 416 (1-9) for regular math classes and page 445 (1-11) for advanced. Advanced students, remember to use proportions for problems 9, 10 and 11.

We'll continue to work on these skills in the Workbook, Lesson 8-3, problems 1-12 for regular math students, while advanced students should do problems 1-12 and 23- 26 on Thursday.

By Friday, we'll be ready to begin studying percents, which simply means "out of 100." Read over pages 418-419 in the text. The regular math classes should do page 420 (1-14) while advanced classes should do problems 15-40.

Friday classes will be shorter, due to our auction that will be held Friday afternoon in the cafeteria. Thanks to all parents who sent in donations! This should be lots of fun, and hopefully your child will come home with something they are excited about!

Report cards will also be issued on Friday morning during homeroom. Please ask for these over the weekend. Hopefully, there will be no surprises. You should have seen and signed all math quizzes and test grades. Most grades look very good this quarter!
