This is actually a science and social studies unit, with a little math mixed in, but as we spent so much time the past couple of weeks reviewing for and taking the EOG's, we thought it would be nice to take a break from math. Besides, this is an area of great interest and concern for Mrs. Goolsby.

Students will be working in a rain forest booklet, with pages to read and worksheets to complete. The booklets will be discussed in class and students may take them home to work on also. They should be completed by the end of the week. They will be graded, so do a good job on them. The grade will count as a social studies assignment.

During the week, students will also receive the quiz they took last week on functions and transformations. We'll discuss them in class, and then take a test on those two units at the end of the week. Be sure to ask questions as we review and reteach for that test.

Next week we'll begin our unit on integers: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.

Today, we reviewed putting decimal numbers in order from least to greatest, first by lining up the decimals, then placing zeros in as place holders. We also reviewed GCF and LCM as well as a permutation problem and reflections, translations, and rotations for our quiz tomorrow. (See page 619, 17-21, for part of this review.)

Advanced math classes received a quiz back on making predictions which they should get signed tonight.

Tonight's homework is in the Workbook, Lesson 12-5.

Also, students should review Chapters 7 (geometry), 8 (proportions and percents), 9 (integers), 10 (area and circumference), 11 (probability), and 12 (functions, translations, reflections, and rotations) to prepare for their EOG test in math on Wednesday.

TUESDAY: We will review for our EOG on page 633 (omit #9) and the names of angle relationships in chapter 7 (page 341). After checking our homework, we will take our quiz on chapter 12, function tables, translations, reflections, and rotations.

Regular math classes will take their quizzes home to be signed tonight.

WEDNESDAY: We will begin class with a final review of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing of fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals to prepare for the calculator inactive part of the EOG. Homework tonight will be in the workbook, Lesson 12-1 and page 628 (4, 5, and 6). This homework will be our final review before the test.

THURSDAY: We will have a shortened class, due to the EOG's, as we did on Wednesday. We'll check our homework from last night and then take a break! WHEW! Thanks for working so hard on EOG's. They will be returned during the week. We practiced some warm-up problems on the board determining how many outcomes were possible with different permutations. Then we learned to write an equation for a function. Tonight, read page 598-599, and do page 600-601 (1-24, omitting 1, 10, 17, 18, and 19).

For warm-ups on TUESDAY, we will practice making some more predictions, as on page 582. After checking homework, we will learn to graph transformations. Read page 610-611, then do page 611-612. You will need graph paper to do the next 3 lessons. You may put several lessons on one sheet of paper.

On WEDNESDAY, we will do Workbook Lesson 12-3 as a warm-up. Then we will learn to graph reflections. Read page 613-614, then do page 614-615 (1-13).

THURSDAY, we will practice som more graphing of reflections, using Workbook Lesson 12-4.

Finally, on FRIDAY, we will review area and circumference of circles, then check homework. We will practice graphing rotations. Read page 616-617 and so page 618-619 (1-13).

Remember to start reviewing each night in your workbook to make sure that you are ready for the EOG's next week. Try one or two problems on each workbook page to see if you remember the material.

Students may stay after school Tuesday or Wednesday for extra help. Just have a parent write a note in the planner on that day to give a student permission to stay. We are here until 4:45 each day.

Also, remember to check grades in SPAN at least once weekly so that you can keep up with progress. Parents should have seen each grade, to be signed, before it is entered into SPAN. Please ask to see one grade each week, parents. Thanks for your help.

Today, we practiced some sample problems for the EOG's. If you are absent today, be sure to get a copy of these problems from the board. They are very important! After checking homework on page 582 (1-11), we will do a review on page 586 (1-3), page 587 (1-4) and page 592 (16-19). Finish this review at home tonight. This will help to prepare us for our quiz on Friday on permutations and combinations. Also, students received back their probability quizzes from page 593 and we discussed them. They should be signed tonight.

No math class on Thursday due to the Field Trip to the planetarium in Chapel Hill!

On Friday, we will check the reviews listed above, then take our quiz. Then we checked our homework from last Thursday night, to see how well we understood using tree diagrams Tree diagrams are used to make a list of all possible combinations of outcomes of a compound event. Today's lesson involved learning how to find the theoretical probability of a compound event. Students should read page 574-575, then do page 576 (1-20).

Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 6th period math classes received their first probability quizzes back today to get signed. Please ask for these tonight, parents. 7th period math class will have theirs returned tomorrow. This class has 2 letters to give to parents tonight from the school.

All students need to make sure they have turned in their field trip permission forms, report cards signed, and yellow registration cards.

On Tuesday afternoon, we will offer tutoring for students who had difficulty on the probability quiz. We will reteach and review those concepts to help students prepare for the upcoming test on Thursday. If you have not already filled out a permission form to stay on Tuesday afternoons for HW club, be sure to have a parent sign permission in your planner for you to stay tomorrow. Indicate what time the parent would like for the student to be picked up, where, and by whom. We are available to help until 5:00 tomorrow.

On Tuesday, we will do warm-ups in our workbook, Lesson 11-4. #1 and 2. Then we will learn 2 new vocabulary words, permutations and combinations, and find out the difference between the two. Read page 578-579, then do problems 1-4 in the first set on page 579, and 1 and 2 in the last set. Homework tonight is in the Workbook, Lesson 11-3 for 2nd period, Lesson 11-5 for all other classes.

On Wednesday, we will continue to practice probability problems, learning to compute factorials. Homework for Wednesday is page 590-591 (1-15), which is the chapter review. This is a good review for our test tomorrow.

On Thursday, we will continue warm-ups in Lesson 11-4 in the workbook, problems 3 and 4. Then we will practice finding out the number of possible outcomes for compound events, both permutations and combinations. Then we will have a take-home test on probability. This test will include material from Lessons 11-1 through 11-5 in the textbook, but not the material on permutations and combinations. We will practice those concepts more before taking a test on them after spring break. (The test will be near the end of the week we come back.)

On Friday, we will continue to practice permutations and combinations. The homework over the break will be quick and easy: an Easter Egg worksheet in which the students hunt for eggs with equivalent fractions, decimals and percents. This should be fun, and they may decorate their eggs if they'd like!

Have a terrific spring break. We all deserve it. We've worked hard!

Remember, when we return, we will be ready for our field trip to Chapel Hill on Thursday of that week.

Happy Monday! Today we reviewed finding the area of a circle, with practice on page 520 (18, 19, and 20). We then made test corrections to last week's test on area and circumference. Students should get these tests signed tonight. In class, we learned to find the experimental probability of an event. Study the vocabulary on page 558-559 tonight, especially experiment, outcome, and sample space. Second period math should do Workbook Lesson 11-2, while other classes should do page 560-561 (1-14). On Tuesday, our warm-ups are on page 509 (#2). Then we will learn the difference between experimental and theoretical probability. We will read and discuss page 564-565, then do page 566-567 (1-33). Wednesday's warm-ups will be on page 509 (#3). We will check homework, then practice finding the theoretical probability of an event, using W0rkbook Lesson 11-3. The Mid-Chapter quiz on page 568 will be assigned and taken up for a grade on Thursday. On Thursday, we will continue to work on page 509, doing problem #4. We will collect the homework quiz on page 568. Then we will learn to make an organized list of all possible outcomes of an event. Study the examples on page 570 and the list on page 571. Then do page 572 (1-5, making tree diagrams or lists, and then #6-10, with answers only.) You do not need to make a list or tree for 6-10 if you feel you can do them using numbers only. Our math lesson on Friday, the Early Release day, will be a special lesson involving the viewing of the film, The Devil's Arithmetic. Students will work together in groups in homerooms to produce a graph. Talk with your group about this project if you are absent from school on that day. Have a great weekend!

Today we began with warm-ups on page 520 (13 and 14) where we practiced finding the circumference and area of circles. We then checked Monday night's homework on Lesson 10-5 in the workbook, and students received their Luck O'The Irish graphs to take home to be signed. Parents, please ask to see these grades tonight. Homework for tonight is page 549 (1-7). Though it looks like only 7 problems, there are actually 13, as most problems ask for 2 answers, perimeter and area or circumference and area. Wednesday's warm-ups are on page 520 also, continuing the review of circles (15, 16, 17). We will then begin our study of probability of independent and dependent events. We will learn today how to estimate the likelihood of an event and compare probabilities. Read page 554-555. Then do page 556 (1-14) in regular math, and (1-20) in advanced math. On Thursday, we will review "the Big G," which contained our units of measurement for capacity: gallon, quart, pint, cup, and fluid ounces. We'll draw the "sweet 16" heart full of ounces, and the Big T for 2000 pounds in a ton! After checking homework, we will do workbook 11-1 in class, then page 551 (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10) for homework. Remember that Friday is a teacher workday. Any work that a student wishes to get credit for must be turned in by Thursday before they leave school, or it cannot be given credit. Report card averages will be finalized during the day on Friday.

Today, math classes continued to work on finding area of parallelograms and triangles. We practiced breaking more complicated figures into simpler parts so that we could use the formulas we knew to find areas of figures. Read page 508-509, then do Workbook Lesson 10-3. Show all work on notebook paper. Problems need to be worked out on 3 lines, with the formula on the first line, substituting numbers for the variables on the second line, then finally, putting the answer on the third line. Don't forget to include the squared units, and show all work in rows and columns. Number all problems. We will have a test next Monday that will include these area problems, along with circumference and area of circles.

Second, sixth, and seventh period classes received their integer quizzes to be signed today. Third period will receive theirs tomorrow.

Warm-ups for Tuesday, March 22 are on page 503 (23-26), on adding and subtracting decimals. After checking the Workbook Lesson 10-3, we will continue to compute area and perimeter, then do page 510 (1-8) in regular math. Advanced math classes will discuss comparing perimeter to area on page 511-512 in the text, then do page 513 (1-8) for homework.

On Wednesday, we will warm-up on page 503 (27-30) on proportions and percents. After checking homework, we will learn to identify parts of a circle, then find circumference and area of a circle. Read page 516-517, then do page 518 (1-9) for regular math, and (1-12) for advanced.

Thursday's warm-ups will be on page 507 (21-26) on multiplying mixed numbers. We will continue to practice finding area and circumference of circles on page 518 (13, 14, 15) and page 520 (15 - 20). Remember to ask questions and to study for the quiz on Monday on finding area of triangles, parallelograms, and circles.

For Monday, March 14, we will discuss the Blue Diamond Assessments we took last week, so that students can correct any mistakes they made on finding percentages. Then they checked their homework and learned about transformations (translations, reflections, and rotations). Read page 365-366, then do page 367-368 (1-17).

Warm-ups on Tuesday continued the practice on percents, to help students prepare for their Blue Diamond Assessments on those skills. We worked on Blue Diamond 7 and 8, and will finish in class tomorrow. For homework, regular math students should do Workbook 7-10, while advanced math students will do that page along with a worksheet on angles. They should do the right hand side of the worksheet only. All students will take a quiz on Thursday on classifying triangles and transformations. Also, all classes will have their angles quizzes returned and should get those quizzes signed for extra credit.

Warm-ups for Wednesday are on page 414 (4, 5, and 6) on proportions and map scales. After checking homework, students will be assigned page 384-386 (3-11 and 18) to help them prepare for their quiz on Thursday. We will also introduce integers in class this day. Advanced math students will do the left-hand side of the worksheet on angles (1-23).

Thursday's warm-ups are on page 425 again, problems 52-59. After checking homework, we will take our quiz. Then we will do homework on page 389 (1-10). On number 6, be sure to work out all 4 problems to pick the best answer choice.

On Friday, our warm-ups will be on integers, Workbook 9-1. Then we will check homework.
Our lesson will be on comparing and ordering integers, from page 454-455 in the text. Homework will be on page 456 (1-30).

Remember that we do offer homework help after school on Tuesdays. We missed everyone during the break! We hope your holiday was terrific.

As we start back this week, we'll be starting a new unit on decimals. Today we'll learn about the basics: place value, different ways to express decimals, and ordering and comparing decimals. Regular math classes will do Lesson 3-1 (1-9) in the workbook, while advanced math should do page 94 (1-16) in the textbook.

Remember that we will offer after school tutoring tomorrow, Tuesday, to students needing extra help. See Mrs. Woodward for a permission form to stay. We need some advanced math students to help tutor during these help sessions, if anyone is interested. Thanks. (Be sure to bring a snack; you'll get hungry by this time in the afternoon!)

All students will have a test on fractions and mixed numbers on Thursday. We will review concepts on this test all week during warm-ups to help any students who are struggling. This test covers all the skills we have practiced over the past 3-4 weeks, on comparing and ordering fractions, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed numbers.

Remember that Friday is an early release day. Students will be released at 12:30 that day. During the morning, we will have our school spelling bee, and do some special activities in social studies to get ready for our Renaissance Fair next Friday. Therefore, we will not have math classes on Friday.

Today, students worked on a review of fractions and mixed numbers. Homework tonight is in the workbook, Lesson 5-2, problems 10-17. Students must show how they changed the mixed numbers to fractions to get credit. Then they should multiply numerators and then do the same for the denominators. Remember to simplify your answers.

In advanced math classes, we will take our Blue Diamond Assessment 3 and 4, on fraction addition and subtraction. These students will take their quiz on multiplication of mixed numbers next week, as we will not have math class on Friday (see below). For homework tonight, they should do Workbook 5-2.

Remember that tomorrow is Veteran's Day. Take time to thank a veteran for giving of their time and energy and devotion to our country.

On Friday, the Anaconda team will run a "team time" schedule. The first hour, they will take their science test. Then they will do a social studies activity during the second hour, and take time to read library books when they are finished. Students who asked to be included in the spelling bee will have their competition during this time as well. After lunch and electives, our team will view "The Lightening Thief," a movie based on the book they are reading during language arts class. We will compare and contrast the movie and the book to note similarities and differences. Remember, the movie is BASED ON the book. It does not mean the movie IS the book!

Have a great weekend! Go HEELS! Ask your child about this short-cut tonight! Homework for regular math classes is the worksheet, "Find A Match," which is on the back of the quiz that they are bringing home tonight to get signed. For advanced classes, the homework is on page 214 (7-9 and 19-32). They also have a quiz to get signed. The homework was assigned on page 174-5 (1-43) and 180 (1-32). Students are allowed to finish the assignment over the weekend if they needed to. That will be their only weekend homework.

On Friday we took our unit test. I hope everyone did well! (Advanced classes will be allowed some time during Monday's class to finish, as their test was longer and several students did not finish.) Have a great weekend!

Today, we reviewed for our unit test on Friday. This test will cover all skills that we have learned so far this year. It will cover exponents, order of operations, properties (commutative, associative, distributive and identity), factors (primes and composites, listing all factors of a number, prime factorization, GCF, and divisibility rules) and multiples and LCM. Homework for tonight is the Prime Time worksheet. Advanced math should also complete "Why Did the Horse Eat with His Mouth Full?"

Regular math classes received quizzes today that should be signed and returned tomorrow.

On Tuesday, we will continue to review for our test on Friday. We will focus on the first two of these on Monday, and the night's homework will be a worksheet. Students must remember to also name the property in each example. Do Side A only, "What did the girl say to the empty refridgerator?" Warm-ups today were on page 33 (28-32).

Tuesday, we will do our warm-ups on page 43 (15, 16, 17). We will learn to use the distributive property (see textbook, page 25). For homework we will do page 26 (5-12 and 17-20). This is not just an exercise in multiplication. Students must follow the steps in showing the distributive property, using the examples shown in class.

On Wednesday, we will do a riddle with exponents (overhead transparency), then continue to work on the distributive property, and review the identity property as well. The homework for Wednesday will be in the workbook, lesson 1-5, Advanced math classes will receive their workbooks in class. Do only problems 10-21 on that page.

Thursday's warm-ups will be on the same workbook page as Wednesday, on problems 1-4. We will then take our properties quiz. All classes will do Side B of Monday's worksheet, "Secret Code."

There will not be a math class on Friday due to our Early Release schedule and the Freedom Shrine dedication assembly.
